Sing When Your Winning...

What’s the score?

You hear it all the time, one coach to another…did you win at the weekend? What was the score? Or the classic: How did you get on?

The response very much depends on he score…

...We played really well, we passed the ball around but we lost 12-0!

....Or if the team won: We won 12-0!

So what is wrong with this?

Well firstly we need to change how we view youth football, we need to develop the children. This is taking the focus from the win being the scoreline, and instead the win being players developing their skills and making good independent decisions on the field of play.

How can we change this?

Ask the right questions and you will get the right answers!

How did you play at the weekend?

This question puts the focus on the play rather than the score and will produce a response focused on the performance.

Did you have a good team performance? Which players stood out?

It’s just about bringing it back to the individual players development and not the scoreline.

We can start a revolution if we can keep promoting this message and in 5-10 years time we may even be able to change a footballing culture at youth level…or even across the whole spectrum of football!!

What do you think?
